Tunisian outfit CS Sfaxien says it is making progress in its campaign to curb financial woes. The club from Sfax managed to mobilize fans and sponsors in a campaign dubbed ‘Loyal to the Citadel’ in hopes of raising funds for next season.
It has been a very difficult season for Sfaxien after their financial instability reached a concerning level. The club's board members resigned due to the enormous task that Sfaxien found themselves facing.
Sfaxien set up a campaign and raised more than $149,000 USD (450,000 Tunisian Dinar). According to the club’s treasurer, Chadi Ghorbal, close to 88% of the funds came from sponsors and prominent businessmen. Ghorbal further noted that the club aims to collect 1,330,000 USD (4 million Tunisian Dinar) from the campaign.
La Presse reported that fans have also stepped up to support the club during these challenging times. The eight-time Tunisia Ligue 1 champions have long been known for assembling competitive squads, but mounting debt and ongoing financial troubles have significantly impacted their on-field performance. On Saturday they suffered a 1–0 defeat to league leaders Espérance on Matchday 28.
Sfaxien are currently eighth on the league table with 38 points and were eliminated at the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup earlier this season.
