Dansin’s screamer helps Pirates neutralize Mamelodi Sundowns

Orlando Pirates youngster Cemran Dansin produced a moment of magic on Saturday to help the Bucs draw 1-1 with Betway Premiership holders Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder struck a perfect volley from distance following a corner kick in the 35th minute to cancel out Peter Shalulile’s opener for hosts Sundowns, who failed to assert themselves after a positive start.

A highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash appeared set to go the way of the reigning champions. Sundowns were eager to attack and their efforts were rewarded in the 20th minute when high pressing caused Pirates to turn the ball over in their half.

The hosts pounced and quick ball movement ended with Arthur Sales’ cross finding Shalulile, whose initial shot was saved by Pirates keeper Sipho Chaine before the Namibian’s follow up attempt just snuck past Chaine.

The visitors did not particularly impress with their response but an outstanding individual play from Dansin stole the show. Oswin Appollis’ corner kick was headed outside of the penalty area but Dansin struck his volley attempt cleanly and Masandawana keeper Ronwen Williams could only watch as the ball slammed into his goal off the crossbar.

Little was created from that point on with a cautious approach from Pirates neutralizing the sputtering Sundowns attack. The 1-1 result leaves the holders two points ahead of second place Sekhukhune United and three points clear of the Bucs, who have two games in hand as well as newly gained momentum after a shock elimination at the hands of Congolese club FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo in the CAF Champions League.
