De Jong breaks silence on high-profile switch to Pirates

Orlando Pirates’ newest recruit, Andre de Jong, has officially broken his silence. Following his high-profile move from Stellenbosch FC, the 29-year-old New Zealander is not just looking to make up the numbers—he’s looking to make history.

After a failed pursuit in the previous window, the Buccaneers finally secured their man last week. Now, as the club sits two points clear at the summit of the Betway Premiership, De Jong finds himself at the heart of a season that could see Pirates claim an unprecedented quadruple.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has bolstered an already frightening “creative hub.” De Jong joins the likes of Sipho Mbule and Patrick Maswanganyi, adding tactical versatility to the Soweto giants.

Having played in South Africa since 2019—with stints at AmaZulu and Stellenbosch—the Kiwi international is no stranger to the demands of the PSL. His transition to Gauteng is further eased by familiar faces; he reunites with former Stellies teammates Deano van Rooyen and Sihle Nduli.

Pirates’ De Jong Eager To “Break the Drought”

With the MTN8 and Carling Knockout trophies already in the cabinet, the pressure is on to secure the league title for the first time since 2012. Speaking on the weight of expectation, De Jong was candid:

“There are a lot of expectations from the fans to break the league drought. Hopefully, we can do it this season and really stamp our authority when we return to action.”

While the January window is notoriously difficult for transitions, De Jong has hit the ground running during the 2025 AFCON break. “It’s been a whirlwind,” he admitted. “We have been working really hard, getting a lot of fitness and conditioning under our belts. I’m looking forward to getting some games and contributing to the team.”

What De Jong brings to the Bucs:

Off-the-ball Work Rate: Known for his engine, he fits perfectly into Pirates’ high-pressing system.

Final Third Creativity: Aiming to improve interplay and goal contributions.

International Pedigree: The move is expected to cement his place as a regular for the New Zealand national team.

Interestingly, De Jong’s recent history with Pirates was defined by heartbreak; he was part of the Stellenbosch side that lost multiple finals to the Buccaneers. Now, he’s on the other side of the white line.

“Pirates have shown so much success over the past few seasons,” De Jong noted. “Settling in Joburg is a bit different from Stellenbosch or Durban, but I’m looking forward to exploring the city and continuing that success.”

As the league prepares to restart, all eyes will be on how Ouaddou integrates De Jong into a side that looks increasingly like champions-elect.
