Denis Masinde Onyango’s name is synonymous with success in the South African Premier Soccer League, and his recent achievement further solidifies his legacy.

The former Uganda Cranes captain now boasts 12 league titles, a milestone he reached after helping Mamelodi Sundowns secure the 2024/25 season crown. For Onyango, this title holds extra significance.

As he shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the latest victory is special because it completes a unique cycle. “Another medal in the bag,” he wrote. “This one is special. Why? Because it completes the year [from January to December] that 12 league titles; every month had its own trophy. So, this was special for me.”

At 40 years old, the veteran goalkeeper shows no signs of slowing down. His focus now shifts to the CAF Champions League final, where Mamelodi Sundowns will face Egypt’s Pyramids this weekend.

With his eyes on continental glory, Onyango’s journey continues, culminating in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where Sundowns will represent Africa among the world’s elite.

Beyond his remarkable 12 league titles, Onyango’s trophy cabinet is filled with over 20 prestigious medals from his stints with SC Villa, SuperSport United, and Mamelodi Sundowns, including the 2016 CAF Champions League.

His stellar performances have earned him international recognition as well, with the International Federation of Football History and Statistics ranking him 10th among the world’s best goalkeepers in 2016.

That same year, and again in 2018, he was named to the African Team of the Year. Denis Onyango’s journey through African football is one for the history books, and with more battles ahead, the legendary goalkeeper continues to inspire.
