Desmond Ofei announced as new Ghana U-23 national team coach

Desmond Ofei has been announced as the head trainer of the Ghana U-23 national team, the Black Meteors.

The young tactician will lead the Olympic team after his journey with the under-20 national team, the Black Satellites, at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Ofei, who currently serves as an assistant coach with the senior national team popularly known as the Black Stars, led the U-20’s to a gold medal at the 13th African Games hosted by Ghana in 2023 before qualifying for the U-20 AFCON after placing second to Nigeria at the U-20 WAFU-Zone B regional qualifying tournament in Togo.

The team failed to glitter at the U-20 AFCON finals in Egypt, exiting at the quarterfinal stage after a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat against the hosts. Ofei also led the team to the bronze medal at the WAFU-B U-20 Boys Cup in Accra earlier this year.

Ofei will be assisted by ex-Ghana winger and former coach of Nsoatreman, Yaw Preko, and Baba Nuhu Malam. Preko will add a lot of experience to the backroom staff after serving as assistant at Hearts of Oak before stints at Accra Great Olympics and Nigerian side Ifenyi Ubah. Preko recently guided the U-15 boys national team to gold at the Mondialito Promise Tournament in Israel.

Nuhu Malam has previously handled the U-17 national girls team, the Black Maidens, as well as Bolga All Stars and Real Tamale United. He is currently the head coach of Women’s Premier League side Pearlpia Ladies FC. The goalkeeping department of the Black Meteors will be handled by former Medeama and Kotoko shot stopper Montari Tagoe.
