Senegal midfielder Dion Lopy can finally afford a smile as he prepares to return to full action for Spanish second tier side UD Almeria.
Sidelined since December 2025, Lopy will hopefully make an appearance for Almeria this Friday against Albacete in the 28th round of La Liga 2.
Having suffered a thigh injury at the end of 2025, the Senegalese midfielder sustained a muscle tear in his right “recto femoral” muscle.
This injury forced him to remain out of action for several weeks, with the club opting for strict precautionary rules and a rigorous protocol to ensure the player’s full recovery.
His absence resulted in twelve missed matches, but more importantly, a significant impact on Almería’s play.
Lopy who is a key player in the eyes of his coach Joan Francesco Ferrer Sicilia is expected to play a key role in Almeria’s La Liga promotion dream as they sit in third on the La Liga 2 table with 48 points, two behind leaders Real Racing Club after 27 matches.
Direct promotion is reserved for the top two teams in the standings, while those finishing 3rd through 6th will compete in the playoffs for a chance to reach the first division.
The return of Dion Lopy, under contract with the Spanish club until June 2029, therefore comes at a crucial moment in the season.
The 24-year-old, who started his career at Oslo FA Dakar joined UD Almeria from Reims and has made 16 appearances with two goals prior to suffering the injury last year. He has five senior caps for Senegal after rising through the U-20 and the U-23s.
