Senegal Football Federation (FSF) president Augustin Senghor has received strong backing from former national team players El Hadj Diouf and Salif Diao ahead of the upcoming presidential election. The long-serving incumbent is running for a fifth term.
According to Wiw Sport, former Teranga Lions forward Diouf stated that Senghor is the right choice to lead the FSF for another term.
“We make a good team, and we have won trophies. Augustin meets all the criteria for this position. He is respectful, hardworking, serious, and has never been cited in any dubious matters. We have travelled everywhere, and I can only speak well of him. And out of loyalty, I support him.”
Diouf’s former teammate Diao, on the other hand, defended Senghor’s ambition to run for another term, although his opponents are questioning his motives. “Augustin is still young. Longevity means nothing compared to competence. You can’t walk with someone and betray them tomorrow. Everyone who talks about it has been with him at one time or another.”
Senghor is a former mayor of Gorée. He is also the president of Senegalese top-division side US Gorée. The football administrator has held the FSF presidency since 2009 and recently stepped down from his vice presidency post at CAF, citing the growing influence of Morocco in the continental football governing body.
Senghor is expected to face six candidates, especially Abdoulaye Fall, in the FSF election on Saturday, August 2.
