Djiboutian Football Federation (FDF) president Souleiman Hassan Waberi hopes he will be elected to the FIFA Council when African nations meet in the Confederation of African Football's Elective General Assembly in Cairo on March 12.

The CAF vice president has been working on getting the necessary votes since early January. He was elected to the FDF presidency in December 2024 after resigning from his post for months following a corruption scandal in Djibouti.

Waberi is an influencial figure in CAF and East Africa's football body CECAFA. Both CECAFA and Southern Africa's COSAFA nations agreed to vote for each other’s candidate for the FIFA Council membership. Ten aspirants will lock horns in hope of getting voted to FIFA with five places available to be a FIFA Council member.

Waberi told Djibouti News Agency that it will be a historical event for his country if he can achieve the feet. “You know the election is history for our country. Because it will be the first time a Djiboutian will enter FIFA, if I succeed in the election.”

Waberi is a former referee. He has been FDF president since 2012 after being referee committee head since 2008.
