DR Congo: Pitch invasion mars yet another league match

Pitch invasion characterised yet another domestic league match in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Saturday, raising questions on venue security and denting the Central African nation’s football image.

This is the second game that has ended prematurely in the DRC in back-to-back weeks. In the previous weekend, TP Mazembe and St Eloi-Lupopo supporters were involved in violence at the former’s stadium in Lubumbashi, leading to the damage of the venue following the half-time incident.

In the latest incident, the Linafoot Ligue 1 match ended prematurely in the dying minutes after OC Renaissance du Congo fans invaded Tata Raphaël Stadium pitch in a reaction to the disappointment of watching their team trailing 0-2 to FC Les Aigles du Congo.

Why OC Renaissance du Congo fans invaded the pitch

The former Linafoot Ligue 1 champions had taken the lead following goals from Glody Kikwama Mujinga in the 22nd minute and Miguel Quintas (90th).

With time running out and limited prospect of overturning the tables, the Renaissance supporters invaded the pitch to demonstrate against Renaissance FC president Willy Kindembe, accusing him of failing the club.

What next now after the Linafoot Ligue 1 incident?

In a statement, FC Les Aigles du Congo confirmed the incident, saying they are waiting for the Linafoot disciplinary committee verdict on the matter.

“The match was packed in the final moments with Miguel’s second goal at 90+2, just before the meeting was interrupted,” reads the statement.

“Following this goal, Renaissance fans invaded the field of play, forcing the game to stop when there were only minutes left to be played. [Now] waiting for the final decision.”

How Renaissance reacted after the match

In a separate statement, Renaissance did not address the issue of the fans’ behaviour, but simply announced that statutes governing the administration of the team have since been endorsed.

“The statutes adopted at the Statutory General Assembly on January 5, 2026, have now been officially notarized! More than just a piece of paper, it’s the legal shield that protects the future of our club and guarantees its stability. Together, let’s move towards a new era of professionalism,” reads the statement.

The matter now awaits the decision of the league governing body. In case FC Les Aigles du Congo are awarded maximum points, they would take their tally to 43 points from 22 matches as Group B leaders while OC Renaissance du Congo would drop into the relegation zone with 18 points from 21 games.
