Drogba comparison heats up as Golden Arrows unveil Junior Dion

Golden Arrows have officially announced the signing of Ivorian international Junior Dion, the former AmaZulu FC and Marumo Gallants striker.

The Betway Premiership side revealed Dion’s arrival on Friday, making a bold comparison by describing him as the “most powerful striker from Ivory Coast since Didier Drogba.”

Drogba, the Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend, was renowned for his prolific goal-scoring in Europe, cementing his place as one of the world’s best forwards.

Dion, 31, joins Arrows after a loan spell at Gallants last season, where he scored three goals in 10 appearances. This marked his second stint with Gallants since he first arrived in South Africa in 2021 from Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy. His initial impressive performances for Gallants, including helping them reach the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals, drew significant interest from other clubs.

He then moved to AmaZulu FC during the 2022/23 season, rejoining coach Romain Folz. However, after two seasons with the KZN-based side, Dion was loaned back to Gallants before making his permanent move to Golden Arrows.

The club enthusiastically welcomed their new striker on social media on Friday, stating, “The most POWERFUL Ivorian Striker since Didier Drogba. Junior Dion is here to dominate and score goals. Welcome, Striker Junior Dion.”

Meanwhile,  Arrows also confirmed another signing: defender Oumar Komara. The club’s announcement drew another bold comparison, likening Komara’s playing style to that of Ivorian legend Kolo Touré.

“The heart of a Lion, the silence and strength of an Elephant. He looks and plays like Toure.. Kolo Toure. Abafana bes’thende, Welcome DEFENDER Oumar Komara,” the club stated in their enthusiastic social media welcome.
