Betway Premiership newcomers Durban City FC have announced the signing of Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego and the acquisition of former Orlando Pirates striker Letsie Koapeng.
The duo’s transfer coup sees the ambitious club add experienced talent to their squad as they look to continue with their impressive start to life in the South African top-flight.
Durban City, coached by Gavin Hunt, have managed two wins, two draws and a defeat in their opening five games. This is their first season in the Premiership as they gained promotion from the second-tier league last season, winning the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship.
To compete in the big league, they have made changes to their squad, welcoming several seasoned campaigners, including Mashego and Koapeng.
Sundowns and Durban City FC reached a loan agreement for defender Mashego, who has been seeking more playing time. The 29-year-old, a former key member of the Bafana Bafana squad, made only 13 appearances for Sundowns last season. With increased competition for the left-back position from players like Divine Lunga, Aubrey Modiba, and new signing Fawaaz Basadien, Mashego’s opportunities were limited.

The move to Durban City is expected to help him regain form and possibly reclaim his spot in the national team ahead of the upcoming AFCON tournament in December. Mashego has already begun training with his new club.
Meanwhile, striker Koapeng has joined Durban City after a sudden departure from Orbit College FC. The 33-year-old was a hero of Orbit College’s promotion campaign last campaign in the second division, scoring the crucial goal that secured their place in the Betway Premiership. Despite having started the season with the newly promoted club, Koapeng announced his departure on Instagram, citing an “uncomfortable turn” of events.
“Sometimes the hardest decisions are the ones you make for your own peace,” the ex-Pirates man, Koapeng wrote. “I’ve always given my absolute best… I leave with my head held high, knowing I gave my heart to the badge.”
His move to Durban City will see him join a side determined to strengthen their squad with proven talent to compete in the league.
