The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) stated that there is zero tolerance for mistakes caused by match officiating errors in the Ethiopian Premier League.
The top-flight league has seen an increased number of errors from referees, prompting the EFF to call a meeting with match officials on Thursday, January 29.
Clubs in the Ethiopian Premier League have been affected by these errors. Recently, match officials cancelled a clear goal and failed to rule out a goal scored using a hand in round 17 of the league. In the 2025-26 season, some officiating decisions by referees have been criticised by clubs and fans.
Recently, Fasil Kenema, Saint George, Mekele 70 Enderta, and Arbaminch Ketema have shown their discontent with the level of refereeing in the league.
EFF Secretary General Bahiru Tilahun notified the match officials that the federation has zero tolerance when it comes to blatant errors. Tilahun affirmed that match officials will receive the necessary support from the federation but added that the level of officiating must improve. Tilahun’s strong words suggested that the federation will take appropriate measures against referees going forward.
In a statement, the EFF said the referees acknowledged the mistakes and agreed to improve. “Regarding the refereeing problems seen in the Premier League, all match officials acknowledged the existence of the problem. They apologized and stated that they will work collaboratively to address the problems through cooperation, training, and coordination with relevant stakeholders.”
Former referee and National Referees Committee member Lydia Abera told EBC that the lack of communication equipment has made the job more difficult for Ethiopian referees. Tilahun affirmed that, following the directive given by the federation’s president, Isayas Jira, the procurement process for communication equipment is currently underway.
The 20-club league in Ethiopia has completed 17 rounds, with Sidama Coffee topping the standings with 33 points.
