Trezeguet: “South Africa are very strong, but we are Egypt”

Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, Egypt national team star and Al Ahly forward, spoke after the Pharaohs secured a crucial victory over South Africa at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Pharaohs claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win against South Africa in their second Group B match of the tournament, played at Adrar Stadium in Agadir, Morocco.

With this victory, the Egyptian national team guaranteed the top spot in Group B with six points, officially booking their place in the Round of 16 regardless of the results of the final group-stage matches. The result was further boosted by the 1-1 draw between Angola and Zimbabwe, which worked in the north Afrcians’ favor.

Speaking to On Sport, Trezeguet said:
“We respect the South Africa national team because they are a very strong opponent, but we are Egypt.”

He added:
“Thank God, all the players were real men today. The match was very difficult and physically demanding, but God rewarded us for our effort by preserving the winning goal until the end.”

Trezeguet also praised the fans in the stands, concluding:
“The supporters were incredible, especially the Moroccan fans. We thank them so much for their support and encouragement.”

The Pharaohs now head into the final group match with confidence, having already secured qualification and confirmed their status as strong contenders for the AFCON title.
