Pyramids confirm Egypt Cup semifinal place in match overshadowed by serious injury

Pyramids FC remain the firm favorites to win the Egypt Cup after the reigning African club champions overcame fellow Egyptian Premier League club Petrojet with a 2-0 quarterfinal victory on Tuesday evening.

It was a bittersweet victory for the Cairo club, who lost left back Mohamed Hamdi after the player suffered what looked like a very serious injury that required extensive medical attention.

The favorites were well in control on the pitch. In the 28th minute, Mahmoud Zalaka produced an excellent run on the dribble before finishing with a left-footed effort.

Petrojet failed to put up much resistance and despite a couple of halftime substitutions, it did not get noticeably better. Only two tame efforts came at Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy after halftime.

But early in the second half, Hamdy went down hard under a midfield challenge. While nothing looked particularly frightening about the collision at the time, it appeared that the 23-year-old suffered a neck injury that required a long period of treatment and an ambulance escort off the pitch.

Players and coaches from both teams looked noticeably disturbed. The young defender was making his third appearance with the club at left back following the long-term knee injury suffered by Egypt national team defender Mohamed Hamdi, who shares the same name of his replacement.

The energy in the match went down following the long stoppage but the result was never in doubt. In second half stoppage time, substitute Mostafa Fathi confirmed victory for the CAF Champions League winners with an acrobatic finish.

The Egypt Cup semifinal lineup is now confirmed. Pyramids will clash with ENPPI while Tala’ea El Gaish will face ZED FC, the latter of which will be played on Wednesday (March 18).
