Egypt right-back Mohamed Hany issued an apology after receiving a red card during the 1-0 victory over South Africa on Friday, in the second round of Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Hany was sent off in the closing minutes of the first half, forcing Egypt to play the entire second half with ten men in a challenging encounter against a strong South African side.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Hany said:
“Thank God for the three points. They were extremely important, and I thank the players for the tremendous effort they made in the second half.”
He added:
“I apologize for the red card. I certainly didn’t mean for that to happen, but thank God, we learn from these situations. I also thank my teammates for their great effort against a respectable and good team.”
Hany concluded his remarks by saying:
“The most important thing is that we now have six points and are top of the group.”
Egypt’s 1-0 win over South Africa secured six points from two matches, confirming their place at the top of Group B and guaranteeing qualification for the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.
