Egypt’s U-20 national team began their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Japan at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile. The match, part of Group A’s opening round, highlighted Egypt’s struggles in front of goal against a good Japanese side.

Watch highlights for Egypt vs Japan in FIFA U-20 World Cup:

Japan broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Rion Ishihara converted from the penalty spot after a defensive lapse. The Asian side doubled their lead early in the second half, as Hisatsugu Ishi unleashed a strike from outside the box in the 51st minute, leaving the Egyptian goalkeeper with no chance.

While Japan consistently threatened, Egypt failed to establish a real attacking rhythm.

The result leaves Egypt needing a strong response in their next fixture against New Zealand on September 30. Group A also features hosts Chile alongside Japan and New Zealand, with the FIFA U-20 World Cup running in Chile from September 27 to October 20.
