Egypt and Nigeria set new AFCON historic record

Egypt and Nigeria have become the most successful national teams in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history in terms of reaching the semi-finals, after both secured their places among the last four of the 2025 edition.

Egypt qualified for the 2025 edition semi-finals following a 3-2 victory over Ivory Coast on Saturday evening, while Nigeria booked their spot earlier the same day with a 2-0 win against Algeria in the quarter-finals.

With these results, both Egypt and Nigeria have now reached the AFCON semi-finals for the 17th time in their history, a record that puts them joint-top on the list of the most frequent semi-finalists in the competition history.

In the 2025 edition semi-finals, Egypt will face Senegal, while Nigeria are set to clash with host nation Morocco. Both matches will be played on Wednesday, January 14.
