Egypt starter ruled out of AFCON with ACL Injury

The Egypt national team have confirmed that left-back Mohamed Hamdy has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), dealing a major blow to the Pharaohs’ campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

Hamdy sustained the injury during Egypt’s Round of 16 clash against Benin on Monday evening.

The team doctor Mohamed Abou El-Ela revealed that medical scans confirmed a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in the player’s knee.

Mohamed Hamdy had been a regular starter for Egypt earlier in the tournament, featuring from the beginning in the group-stage matches against Zimbabwe and South Africa and in the round of 16 game against Benin.

Despite the setback, Egypt secured qualification to the AFCON quarter-finals after a 3-1 victory over Benin, in a marathon encounter that went into extra time.

The Pharaohs will now await the winner of the match between Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso to learn their opponent in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter-finals.
