U-20 World Cup: Egypt suffer setback as New Zealand turn the tide in dramatic clash

Egypt’s U20 national team saw their World Cup hopes take another heavy blow after falling 2-1 to New Zealand, despite making a dream start in their second group-stage encounter.

It all began perfectly for the Young Pharaohs. In the 5th minute, midfielder Ahmed Khaled Kabaka unleashed a precise strike from inside the box to fire Egypt ahead, raising hopes of a revival after their opening defeat to Japan.

But the joy was short-lived. New Zealand struck back almost immediately, with Luke Smith converting a precise cross in the 13th minute to level the contest. Just three minutes later, the turnaround was complete as Luke Juan scored to put his side 2-1 up.

From that point on, Egypt couldn’t find the equalizer and despite their efforts, the damage was done. The result leaves the North Africans with two defeats from two matches, their campaign hanging by a thread.

For New Zealand, it was a vital response after their loss to Chile in the opening round. Now, Chile and Japan are both sitting on three points ahead of their meeting in the second round.

Only the top two nations are guaranteed progression, along with the four best third-placed teams, meaning Egypt now face an uphill battle to keep their World Cup dream alive.
