The Egyptian Premier League kicked off its eighteenth round on Monday, which saw prolific striker Mabululu make an anticipated return to Egyptian football as Al Ittihad Alexandria defeated rivals Smouha 1-0.
The Angolan was not able to dazzle on his return following a successful spell with Libyan giants Al Ahli Tripoli, but did generate some excitement with a 24th minute goal that was disallowed by VAR. Following a free kick service into the penalty area from on loan Al Ahly playmaker Mohamed Magdy “Afsha”, Mabululu arrived to finish from a cross but replays showed that the ball hit his hand.
However, Ittihad did prevail with a victory courtesy of a second half strike from substitute Abdelrahman Magdy. After a very poor start to the season, the club made multiple signings at the beginning of the year and have now won their last three league matches.
The other two matches on Monday ended in draws. Modern Sport and Kahraba Ismailia played to a 1-1 result with both goals coming in the second half. Benjamin Boateng put visitors Kahraba ahead but Nigerian forward Godwin Okpara “Chika” came off the bench to equalize for the hosts.
