Egyptian Premier League: Modern Sport stuns Zamalek in a day of surprise results

The action-packed ninth round of the Egyptian Premier League, known as Nile League, concluded today with two thrilling matches that delivered unexpected results.

Modern Sport stuns Zamalek with a late winner

In a big surprise, bottom-placed Modern Sport claimed their first win of the season by defeating Zamalek 1-0.

The game’s only goal came in the 87th minute, courtesy of Cameroonian left-back Joseph Ngwem, who executed a perfect one-two with his teammate before slotting the ball past Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad.

This dramatic victory marked Modern Sport’s maiden triumph in the league after failing to secure a win in their previous eight matches. The crucial three points lifted them to seven points total and 17th place in the standings.

For Zamalek, this was only their second defeat of the league season, leaving their total at 17 points in third place. They missed the opportunity to move level with table-toppers Pyramids, who remain on 20 points.

Petrojet Upsets Al Masry in another surprise

In another surprise, Petrojet overcame Al Masry with a 2-1 victory.

Rashad Metwally opened the scoring for Petrojet in the 17th minute after capitalizing on a defensive mistake following a long ball from the goalkeeper. Metwally found himself one-on-one with the keeper and made no mistake.

The lead was doubled in the 37th minute through Mostafa El-Gamal, who finished off a well-executed passing move with a precise strike into the net.

Al Masry responded in the 51st minute when Egyptian international Khaled Sobhi scored a goal with his head to make it 2-1.

This victory propels Petrojet to 13 points, placing them eighth in the league standings. On the other hand, Al Masry is in fifth place with 15 points.

Following Al Masry’s defeat, the club’s board of directors decided to suspend the players’ dues indefinitely and deduct 200,000 EGP from each player’s financial entitlements.
