The FIFA World Cup has served a lot of purpose for footballers across the globe with many signing multi-million pound contracts after they partake in the global football festival.
One of the players who aims to have a taste of the World Cup action on the field of play is Ghana midfielder Elisha Owusu. The AJ Auxerre midfielder played a role in the West African nation's qualification for the 2022 edition but could not have a bite at any of the games.
Owusu has played two games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, helping Ghana to top Group I. He is now dreaming of playing a big role at the major tournament should Ghana qualify for the main competition in USA, Canada and Mexico next year.
“The World Cup is the biggest tournament for a footballer because you dream of it from childhood,” the 27-year-old told Flashscore.
“Playing for your country at the biggest stage, with everyone watching, it’s crazy, and you feel proud. It’s difficult to describe such a feeling in words.
“I am looking forward to the 2026 World Cup. Every Ghanaian player is working hard to have the chance to be in the final squad. When you work hard, you want to be in the squad for the World Cup. I train every day and work hard to try and be in the squad for the tournament next year.”
Ghana are currently top of Group I of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 15 points after back-to-back wins against Chad and Madagascar in the Matchday 5 and 6 games in March.
Owusu is likely to return to the squad for the Matchday 7 and 8 games against Chad and Mali in September after being sidelined by an injury.
