Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has announced her 24-player squad for the upcoming friendly matches against Botswana and Zambia.
With their sights firmly set on defending their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title, Banyana Banyana delivered a strong statement in their recent friendlies against Malawi.
They emerged victorious in both encounters, with scores of 3-0 and 2-1 against the Scorchers. These matches were vital preparation for the continental showpiece, which will be held in Morocco from July 5th to 26th.
Three years after their historic first triumph, Banyana Banyana will navigate Group B, facing challenges from Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.
Over the past year, Banyana’s technical team, led by Ellis, has strategically broadened their player pool to ensure strong backup options for their key players in the upcoming Morocco mission.
This proactive approach was evident in selections for the February clash against Lesotho, the two Malawi friendlies, and now the Botswana and Zambia encounters. In these matches, coach Ellis provided opportunities for several young talents to showcase their abilities and potentially secure a spot in the final Wafcon squad.
University of Johannesburg winger Adrielle Mibe and JVW midfielder Casey Gordon have rejoined the team for the friendlies against Botswana and Zambia, following their performances against Lesotho and Malawi.
Regardless of whether these young players make the final Wafcon selection, their inclusion in recent squads suggests a promising future with Banyana Banyana.
Ellis’ troops will face neighbouring Botswana on Wednesday, 28 May, followed by a match against Zambia on Tuesday, 3 June, in two international friendly matches.
