Ellis reflects on Banyana Banyana’s Three-Nations triumph

Following Banyana Banyana’s 2-0 victory over Zambia, which secured the Three-Nations title, head coach Desiree Ellis reflected on the team’s dominant performance and what it took to clinch the title.

The Three-Nations Challenge concluded Tuesday afternoon with Banyana emerging as champions, thanks to a win against Zambia at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

After a goalless first half, Banyana broke the deadlock in the 74th minute via Bongeka Gamede, who scored her first goal for coach Ellis with a spectacular free-kick. Jermaine Seoposenwe doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute, securing the win and the tournament crown for South Africa.

The tri-nations tournament also featured Botswana.

Ellis commended her troops for following instructions during the match, which was the key to winning the title. However, she also noted aspects for refinement, as they prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco this July.

“This was a true team effort. We stuck to the game plan, we denied them space, and we moved the ball around quickly,” said Ellis.

“We still have a lot of work to do. There were moments where Zambia got behind us, and we need to get better at that. Especially in the middle of the park, we gave the ball away unnecessarily.”

Meanwhile, Gamede, whose goal turned the tide, expressed pride in how the team nullified Zambia’s strengths.

“I think we played well. We knew their strengths and how to capitalise on them. We tried to make sure they didn’t attack us as much as possible.”
