Emmanuel Addai: Qarabag forward calm over Ghana snub despite fine form

Every player dreams of representing his nation at senior level, and one of those players is Ghanaian Qarabag FK forward Emmanuel Addai.

The 24-year-old, who spent his developmental years at JMG Bamako, Mali has been in great form for the Azerbaijani club in the UEFA Champions League and the domestic topflight.

Addai, who has made 19 appearances with three goals and two assists in the Premyer Liga for Qarabag this season, is yet to wear the Ghana shirt despite his swashbuckling form for the Blue and Whites.

The former FC 93 Bobigny attacker says he is yet to be contacted by the Ghana Football Association [GFA] regarding the chance to play for the four time African champions.

“No, I haven’t had any contact yet [with the Black Stars. But I believe they’ve seen my performances. Everything happens in God’s time. I’m not in a hurry,” Emmanuel Addai told TV3.

Notwithstanding the seeming disinterest from Ghana’s football authority, Emanuel Addai has expressed readiness to feature for the Black Stars.

“I really want to represent Ghana because I love my country. I grew up watching Ghana lose finals, and I want to help bring joy to my people.”

“I want to be remembered not just for playing abroad but for doing something meaningful for Ghana because I really love Ghana.”

Addai has scored one goal in ten UEFA Champions League games for Qarabag who suffered elimination against English Premier League side Newcastle United in the knockout phase.

Emmanuel Addai played 15 minutes in the second leg during their 3-2 defeat in the UEFA Champions League at the St James Park to Newcastle United, suffering a 9-3 aggregate loss after a 6-1 first leg setback at home.

He began his career at JMG Bamako before signing for French club, FC 93 Bobigny and a further stint at Spanish outfit Alcorcon.

Qarabag FK signed him in 2024 in a two-year deal reported to be in the region of €1 million.
