Celebrated coach Gavin Hunt has sent an emotional goodbye to his former club, SuperSport United, which has sold its Betway Premiership status to Siwelele FC.

The former Bidvest Wits mentor reflected on the years he spent with the Pretoria-based club, especially the trophies won and players developed.

“Goodbye to a club that was dear to my heart. A club where so much was achieved. Trophies, producing players, and so many memories,” Hunt wrote on his X account.

The 60-year-old parted ways with Matsatsatsa in March 2025 when they were in the relegation zone of South Africa’s elite league, with Andre Arendse named interim coach.

A firm believer in the European direct and long-ball game, Hunt is a cult hero at SuperSport after leading them to three league titles between 2008 and 2010 in his initial spell.

The four-time league winner, including with Bidvest Wits FC, rejoined the club in 2022 after an ill-fated stint at Chiefs, but struggled.

Former SuperSport skipper Ricardo Katza has also reacted to the club’s demise. He shared his thoughts on why the club had a special place in his career and South African football history.

"When I got to SuperSport United in 2003, there was one trophy. When I left, there were six. But this was more than just a football club. They developed us holistically. That's why I stayed for so long, especially coming from Cape Town,” Katza told South Africa's Radio 2000.

The reaction comes after SuperSport International released a statement on Thursday announcing the sale of the club’s elite football status to Siwelele to focus on its core business as a sports broadcaster.
