Fasil Kenema and head coach Wubetu Abate are expected to part ways in the coming days. The Ethiopian Premier League club had a dreadful 2024/25 season under the former Ethiopian national team coach, causing fans to call for his departure.
Abate signed a three-year contract with the Emperors in 2023. The Gondar-based club was aiming to return to title contention and become champions again. His second stint at Fasil failed to yield any results. With huge sums of money spent on the transfer of star players, Fasil Kenema was expected by many to be a strong side.
Fasil Kenema is now seeking a new path as they prepare to terminate the coach’s contract. Abate is currently in the United States and is expected to sign for a new team.
Abate started his coaching career with his hometown club, Adama Ketema. His outstanding work at Adama earned him a move to big spenders Dedebit. Abate won the Ethiopian Premier League with Ethiopian Coffee in 2011. He has also worked in Sudan and led the national team to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2022 African Nations Championship.
