Enppi booked their place in the semi-finals of the Egypt Cup after a hard-fought 2-0 extra-time victory over Telecom Egypt at Al Salam Stadium, avoiding what could have been one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
The quarter-final clash ended goalless in regular time, with Telecom Egypt — who compete in the Egyptian Second Division A (Professional League) keeping their net clean. Enppi struggled to break down the Telecom backline over the 90 minutes.
However, the breakthrough finally arrived early in extra time. Substitute Mohab Sami put Enppi ahead in the 96th minute, latching onto a long through ball before finishing in a one-on-one situation to give his side a crucial advantage.
Just five minutes later, Enppi doubled their lead. After a remarkable solo run from Hamed Abdallah, the ball was squared to fellow substitute Ahmed Kofta, who showed great skill to slot home in the 101st minute and effectively seal qualification.
With the win, Enppi advance to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the quarter-final tie between Petrojet and Pyramids.
Despite the defeat, Telecom Egypt can hold their heads high after an impressive cup campaign. The second-tier side produced one of the shocks of the tournament by eliminating Al Ahly in the Round of 32. They also overcame Pharco to reach the quarter-finals, making this one of their most memorable Egypt Cup runs in recent years.
