Ivorian striker Sébastien Haller was on target for FC Utrecht as they thumped Ajax Amsterdam 4-0 on Sunday to cement fourth place for the Eredivisie.
The former Borussia Dortmund forward struck in the 29th minute for FC Utrecht to carry a slender lead going into the break.
Hopes of Ajax Amsterdam's comeback vanished when Miguel Rodriguez scored against the run of play to chip the ball past the advancing goalkeeper in the 52nd minute. VAR confirmed the ball had crossed the line after earlier doubts following Ajax defender’s late goal-line clearance.
The Spaniard put the game beyond the reach of Ajax in yet another counterattack, turning in the box to curl the ball into the far post corner in the 63rd minute. Paxten Aaronson completed the rout with a late strike for FC Utrecht to complete the visitors’ humiliation.
The defeat ended Ajax Amsterdam's three-game winning run. The two teams shared the spoils at 1-1 in the first round. Utrecht are in fourth place, 14 points off the pace of the leaders on the 18-member log table.
