Ernst Middendorp has broken his silence following his departure from Durban City FC, describing the club’s current Top-8 standing and Nedbank Cup run as the result of “strategic planning” and “strategic clarity” implemented during his tenure.
In a statement released on Friday, the veteran German tactician confirmed his time with the Betway Premiership newcomers has come to an end, despite the team enjoying a highly productive debut season in the top flight.
“My focus was on strengthening the club’s football structure, aligning recruitment and performance processes, and providing strategic clarity,” Ernst Middendorp stated. “A key part of my contribution was recruiting and shaping a well-balanced squad for the first PSL season.”
Middendorp’s confirmation of his exit brings a swift end to a week of confusion at the club. Just seven days ago, Chairman Farook Kadodia dismissed reports that the Technical Director had been relieved of his duties, insisting that Middendorp’s absence from the bench during the 2-0 win over TS Galaxy was merely a “weekend break.”
However, that “break” has now formalised into a parting of ways, marking the second major technical change at the club recently, following the exit of head coach Sinethemba Badela.
Despite the off-field turnover, Middendorp leaves the “Citizens” in a position of strength. Currently sitting on 28 points after 18 games, the club is firmly in contention for a Top-8 finish and has secured a spot in the Nedbank Cup Quarter-Finals.
Middendorp credited the squad’s character for this success:
Strategic Balance: Combining veteran leadership with emerging talent.
Tactical Flexibility: A squad built to survive the rigours of the PSL.
Collective Belief: Maintaining consistency as a newly promoted side.
In a statement released on Thursday, the club thanked the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor for his services, confirming that his contract has come to an end.
“Durban City FC confirms that Technical Director Ernst Middendorp has completed his short-term contract with the club, having fulfilled the specific mandate for which he was engaged.
“Middendorp rejoined Durban City FC on 15 December 2025. His brief focused on stabilising and strengthening the club’s technical structures during a period of transition, and that mandate has now been brought to its planned conclusion.
“The club thanks Ernst Middendorp for his professionalism and commitment during his time with us and wishes him success in his future endeavours.”
With the Technical Director post vacant once again, the pressure shifts to interim coach Pitso Dladla to maintain the momentum. Dladla has already proven his worth with a league win and a gritty cup victory over Upington City on penalties.
Durban City now prepares for their weekend encounter against Marumo Gallants at Lucas Moripe Stadium, aiming to prove they can continue their upward trajectory without their veteran administrator.
For Middendorp, he departs with a parting wish for the club to find “further progress” in their remaining 12 league fixtures.
