Espérance de Tunis clinch another league title following thrashing of Olympique Béja

For the seventh time in the last eight seasons, Espérance Sportive de Tunis are the champions of Tunisia’s Ligue 1 Professionnelle! The Blood and Gold wrapped up their latest league triumph on Sunday with a lopsided 5-0 victory at Olympique Béja.

Yan Sasse struck twice in the first half before goals from Youcef Belaïli and Elias Mokwana along with an OB own goal put EST far beyond reach. A routine victory for Espérance turned into a party as word filtered in that closest challengers US Monastir failed to win in their 1-1 draw with ES Metlaoui.

The Blood and Gold extend their record amount of league titles to 34 top division triumphs. They now lead by four points and avoid the drama of a final day where they will face Monastir, who could have overtaken EST with a victory if they had been able to defeat Metlaoui on Sunday. ESM leveled from a deflected free kick by Ahmed Bouassida in the second half to claim a point at Monastir.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Etoile du Sahel took advantage of Monastir’s defeat to move level on 61 points following a 2-0 derby victory over Club Africain. Second half goals from Guinean defender Cherif Camara and striker Firas Chaouat moved ESS into an excellent position to snatch qualification for next season’s CAF Champions League on the final day.

Chaouat now has seven goals in his last six matches for ESS, who can overtake Monastir if they achieve a superior result on the final day when they host CS Sfaxien while Monastir travel to newly crowned champions EST.

The final round will take place on Wednesday and Thursday with the Monastir-EST and ESS-Sfaxien matches on Thursday.
