For the first time in the history of Espérance ST, the Tunisian giants have won all three domestic competitions after the Blood and Gold defeated Stade Tunisien 1-0 to win the Tunisian Cup on Sunday.
Nigerian midfielder Onuche Ogbelu’s crashing long range drive in the second half was enough for EST to secure their 16th Tunisian Cup and their first since the 2015-16 season. A 64th minute corner kick was cleared by Stade Tunisien but Ogbelu unleashed a powerful effort from 35 yards that found its way past ST goalkeeper Sami Helal.
Espérance have won both the league and the cup on five occasions but this year marks the first time the club from the capital have won both competitions in addition to the Super Cup. EST defeated Stade Tunisien earlier this year in February by a 2-0 score to claim the Super Cup, which counts for the 2023-24 season.
EST clinched the Ligue 1 Professionnelle with one match to spare on May 11 when they defeated Olympique Beja 5-0, enough to move beyond reach of closest challengers US Monastir.
Espérance will now turn their focus to proving themselves on the international stage at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. They will begin play on June 16 against legendary club Flamengo before facing Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC and English titans Chelsea in Group D.
