
Nigerian striker, Esther Okoronkwo will begin a new career challenge as she has officially signed for Canadian club, AFC Toronto.
AFC Toronto are set to compete in Canada's first-ever women's professional league, the Northern Super League, which will begin its debut season on April 16 with six clubs competing from locations throughout Canada.
Okoronkwo, a member of the Nigeria women's national team, the Super Falcons, brings her talent and experience to the Canadian top flight after signing from Chinese side Changchun Dazhong. Okoronkwo, 27, is noted for her explosive pace and goal scoring prowess with her arrival seen as a strategic move by the Canadian outfit to bolster their front line.
The club announced: “We are delighted to welcome a player of Esther’s quality to Toronto,” said Billy Wilson, AFC Toronto’s sporting director. “More comfortable as a centre forward, she has the technical and skill qualities needed to make a difference.”
Okoronkwo began her professional journey in France with AS Saint-Étienne’s women’s team before a subsequent move to Spain saw her join UDG Tenerife.
Okoronkwo has been a consistent feature in the Nigerian women’s national team, participating in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
She also featured prominently in the 2024 Paris Olympics, contributing to Nigeria’s strong showing on the global stage.
Okoronkwo said of her new move: “Canada has a growing reputation for women’s football, and joining AFC Toronto is an exciting opportunity for me.
“I’m eager to contribute to the team’s success and give my best for the fans.” She told the club’s media.
