Ethiopian midfielder Gatoch Panom has joined Iraq Stars League side Al Najaf. Panom left fellow Iraqi club Newroz SC after a successful six-month spell.
The defensive midfielder departed Ethiopian side Ethiopian Insurance midway through the 2024/25 season and enjoyed an impressive stint at Newroz. Panom scored four goals and provided one assist during his half-season stay, helping the team perform well in the second round. A regular starter, he became a fan favorite. Panom took to his Instagram account to thank Newroz and its supporters for his time at the club.

Al Najaf, who finished 14th last season, is strengthening its squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Panom has signed a one-year deal with the club. The former Ethiopian national team captain has previously played in Russia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Domestically, he has represented both Addis Ababa rivals Ethiopian Coffee and Saint George.
Panom has once again been overlooked by Ethiopia coach Mesay Teferi for a friendly match against MLS side DC United. He hopes to continue his fine form in Iraq with his new club.
