The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has signed a three-year partnership agreement with Major League Soccer side DC United.
In a ceremony held in Addis Ababa on Thursdsay, EFF secretary general Bahiru Tilahun revealed the details of the agreement.
According to Tilahun, DC United has agreed to fully assist the Ethiopian National Team in travelling to the United States for friendly matches over the next three years. The agreement will enable the Waliyas to play games in the United States with all expenses covered by the American side.
Tilahun further noted that if the national team wins matches, they will receive financial rewards. “Our expenses are covered by DC United. We will receive $20,000 for playing friendly games. We will receive a further $50,000 if we win matches,” said Tilahun.
Tilahun also stated that the EFF is pleased with the agreement. “We are happy with the deal. This creates an opportunity for our players to be seen. So we expect the government to support us.”
The Waliyas travelled to the United States two years ago, and their midfielder Surafel Dagnachew was scouted by Loudoun United. Ethiopian Women's National Team captain Loza Abera also joined DC Power FC following strong cooperation between the EFF and DC United stakeholders.
DC United minority shareholder Eyob Joe Mamo attended the ceremony, together with EFF President Esayas Jira.
