Ethiopian Cup: Premier League clubs dominate Thursday’s results

The 2024/25 Ethiopian Cup Round of 16 ties were played in Sebeta and Hawassa as Mechal, Bahirdar Ketema and Wolayta Dicha confirmed their places in the quarter final.

Mechal dumped Sebeta SubCity out of the knockout cup after emerging victorious 2-0. Second half goals from Abdulkerim Worku and Philimon Gebretasdik booked the record Ethiopian Cup champions a place in the quarters. The result came at a good time for under fire Mechal coach Gebrekirstos Birara.

The Wolayta derby between Boditi Ketema and Wolayta Dicha ended in a win for the Sodo club. The Bees of Tana struck twice in the second interval through Bizuayehu Seife and Mesay Solomon to record a 2-0 win in the derby.

Bahirdar Ketema needed a penalty shootout to dump Halaba Ketema. The Ethiopian Higher League side didn’t not give the Waves of Tana a walk in the park as regular time ended in a barren 0-0 draw. Bahirdar won 4-2 on penalties to advance.

Top flight sides continued to dominate the cup games as six of the already qualified teams for the quarter final encounters all play in the Premier League.
