Ethiopian Insurance crowned 2024/25 Premier League champions after Ethiopian Coffee held

Ethiopian Insurance are the 2024/25 Ethiopian Premier League champions after Mekele 70 Enderta held Ethiopian Coffee to a one-all draw in a Week 34 game on Monday in Adama. Insurance won their first league title with three games to spare.


Relegation battlers Mekele 70 Enderta came from behind to force a draw against second-placed Ethiopian Coffee. The Browns took the lead early in the second half through a goal from Ugandan defender Geoffery Wasawa, but the northern Ethiopian side leveled matters through team captain Mulugeta Woldegiorgis.


Ethiopian Coffee are second with 56 points while Mekele 70 Enderta occupy 15th with 38 points. Ethiopian Insurance are top with 64 points and they are now the confirmed winners of the Ethiopian Premier League.


Insurance head coach Gebremedhin Haile made history by winning his third league title with a third Ethiopian side. He previously won the league with Jimma Aba Jifar and Mekele.


Ethiopian Insurance is owned by the state-owned insurance provider Ethiopian Insurance Corporation. The club had previously only won the Ethiopian Cup, and this is their first-ever major league trophy win. The club reached the semifinals of the 1993 CAF Cup. Insurance is well known for playing an attractive brand of football during the 1980s and 90s.
