Ethiopian Insurance took a big step forward in the Ethiopian Premier League title race on Wednesday after a 3-0 thumping of Sidama Coffee in their Week 32 clash at the Adama Science and Technology University Stadium. Fourth-placed Sidama Coffee gave Insurance a hard time for only the opening twenty minutes.
It was a crucial game in the title chase after Insurance fell to second-placed Ethiopian Coffee last week. Ethiopian Coffee General Manager Gezaghen Ketema was among the attendees in Adama, but Insurance were too strong for Sidama Coffee.
Fikreyesus Teweldebirhane came closest to opening the scoring, but his volley from outside the box rattled the post. At the half-hour mark, an audacious strike from Wegene Gezaghen gave Insurance the lead. Before the interval, Abubakher Sani doubled the advantage with a header.
After the resumption, the Ethiopian Cup finalists tried to get back into the game through futile efforts from Mesfin Tafese and Yigezu Bogale. Nonetheless, their defensive lapses once again cost them. Ethiopian international Birhanu Bekele scored an own goal as Insurance cruised to a convincing win.
Ethiopian Insurance tops the league with 63 points, nine ahead of Ethiopian Coffee. Gebremedhin Haile's side is now very close to winning their maiden Ethiopian Premier League title. Former striker Haile has previously won the league title with Jimma Aba Jifar and Mekele 70 Enderta. The former Saint George and Ethiopian national team player could now win his third league title as a coach with a third club.
