Bahirdar Ketema reclaimed second place from Ethiopian Coffee after Friday's 2-0 win over Ethio-Electric in Round 27 of the Ethiopian Premier League. Defending champions Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and Mechal played out a goalless draw in the later kickoff at Hawassa University Stadium.

The Waves of Tana scored in each half to humble Ethio-Electric 2-0. Midfielder Girma Disasa opened the scoring from the penalty spot 12 minutes after kickoff. Ethio-Electric’s goalkeeper Iddrisu Abdulai nearly saved the penalty, but Disasa managed to score his first goal of the season.

Chernet Gugesa doubled the lead with a well-placed header in the second half. Ethiopian international Gugesa has now scored four goals in his last four league appearances, bringing his season tally to seven.

Bahirdar Ketema are now second with 43 points while Ethio-Electric sit 12th with 32 points.

Reigning Ethiopian champions Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and last season’s runners-up Mechal shared the points in a hard-fought encounter. CBE dominated the first half but struggled to break down the army side’s resilient defense. Mechal looked more composed after the break, but, still reeling from their Ethiopian Cup elimination, they were unable to convert their chances into a win.

Mechal are currently fourth, while CBE dropped to eighth with 36 points.
