Bahirdar Ketema’s hopes of joining the title race in the Ethiopian Premier League took a blow on Saturday after losing to relegation battlers Diredawa Ketema. Sidama Coffee are preparing well for their crucial Ethiopian Cup final, while Hadiya Hosaina and Ethio Electric shared the spoils to wrap up the day.
Diredawa Ketema’s survival hopes were revived after a surprising 2-1 win over Bahirdar Ketema. Abel Asebe gave the Easterners the lead, capitalizing on poor goalkeeping by Senegalese import Pepe Seydou in the first half.
Asrat Tunjo doubled the lead from the spot after the restart. Former Fasil Kenema striker Mujib Kassim pulled one back with twenty minutes remaining. Nevertheless, the Easterners held on to take home maximum points.
Bahirdar Ketema are third with 48 points. Diredawa Ketema are 12th with 36 points.
Sidama Coffee are on the right track for their Ethiopian Cup final after a 1-0 win over Saint George. A first-half header from Ethiopian international Birhanu Bekele was the difference between the two sides. The Coffee Traders sit fourth with 46 points. The record Ethiopian champions are eighth with 40 points.
Hadiya Hosaina and Ethio Electric played out a 1-1 draw. Tsegab Gizaw handed Hadiya the lead, but Abel Habtamu restored parity to bag his ninth goal of the campaign. Ethio Electric are still fighting to avoid relegation as they sit 14th with 34 points.
