Round 24 of the Ethiopian Premier League kicked off with two fixtures on Monday at the Hawassa University Stadium, as Ethiopian Insurance dropped two valuable points and Fasil Kenema registered a decisive victory over Saint George.
League leaders Ethiopian Insurance were held to a surprising 1-1 draw against bottom side Wolwalo Adigrat University. Ugandan striker Fahad Bayo scored on his Wolwalo debut but was shown a red card for simulation in the second half.
Bayo scored from the spot to hand the Yellows the lead but in the 23rd minute, the home side’s Ghanaian center back Kassim Rezak scored a bizarre own goal after a poor clearance by Nigerian goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo. Ethiopian Insurance still tops the standings with 45 points. Wolwalo remain 18th with 10 points.
Fasil Kenema scored twice in the space of three minutes to edge Saint George 2-1. Fasil Kenema striker Getaneh Kebede returned to haunt his former employers with a brace in quick succession. An Abraham Getachew second half tap-in gave the Horsemen a lifeline early in the second interval but the Emperors stood firm to take home maximum points.
Wubetu Abate’s charges are on a three-game winning streak and sit fifth with 33 points. Record Ethiopian champions Saint George are on a seven-game winless run, having dropped to ninth with 31 points.
