Ethiopian Premier League: Insurance on the right track for league title

Round 23 from the Ethiopian Premier League continued on Thursday in Hawassa, south of the capital Addis Ababa, as Wolayta Dicha, Fasil Kenema and leaders Ethiopian Insurance recorded decisive wins. The league crown now seems to be heading towards Addis Ababa side Insurance after their 2-1 victory over Hawassa Ketema.
Insurance scored two goals in the first interval. Mohamed Abera announced himself as a reliable goal getter for Insurance, scoring in the third minute after he capitalized on a defensive lapse from the home side. Former Saint George striker Abubaker Sani doubled the lead with a header before the interval ended.
Cherent Awush’s rocket goal from range gave the Lakers a life line but they were unable to add more goals to stop high-flying Insurance, who are top of the standings with 44 points as they set sight on their maiden league title. Hawassa Ketema are in the relegation zone with 20 points.
A Fitsum Girma first half strike was enough to hand Wolayta Dicha a 1-0 win over Mekele 70 Enderta to go second on the log. The Sodo club now sits second with 36 points while Mekele are 14th with 25 points.
Earlier, Fasil Kenema rallied from behind to pip relegation battlers Wolwalo Adigrat University 2-1. Bulcha Shura gave the Yellows the lead in the second half but goals from veteran striker Getaneh Kebede and Shemsedin Mohamed gave the Emperors maximum points. The Gondar outfit is seventh with 30 points while Wolwalo remain bottom with a dismal nine points.
