Ethiopian Premier League: Late goal lifts CBE over Sidama Coffee

In the final matchday from Round 23 of the Ethiopian Premier League, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) struck late to secure a 2-1 victory over Sidama Coffee.

The reigning champions continued their second-half resurgence, climbing further up the table with another crucial win. Just weeks ago, CBE were battling relegation but a string of consecutive victories has closed the gap on league leaders Ethiopian Insurance.

Ugandan striker Simon Peter opened the scoring for CBE in the first half with a well-placed header. Sidama Coffee responded early in the second half through a long-range, deflected strike by veteran midfielder Yoseph Yohannis. However, a late twist came when Peter’s cross was turned in by Dawit Yohannis, sealing a dramatic and unexpected win for CBE.

With the result, CBE now sit sixth in the standings with 31 points while Sidama Coffee are in 12th place with 26 points.

Elsewhere, Arbaminch Ketema scored in each half to defeat Ethio Electric 2-0. A bizarre own goal by Electric defender Getahun Bafa and a strike from Tamirat Iyassu secured the victory for the Crocodiles. Arbaminch Ketema are now fifth with 33 points.
