The Ethiopian Premier League Share Company (EPLSC) has disclosed that it has opened an investigation into potential match-fixing. EPLSC stated that ten league games were identified for potential match manipulation as the end of the top flight nears.
Recent war of words between league leaders Ethiopian Insurance and Ethiopian Coffee, coupled with relegation battles, prompted the league to open an investigation into match-fixing allegations. The league failed to disclose the ten games under investigation, but the league board is aware of them.
EPLSC stated that the league's technical committee will commence investigations into the last four rounds of games and warned clubs against involvement in match manipulation. Any team found to be involved will be punished in accordance with the law.
The league will have TV coverage with the official broadcaster SuperSport from week 33. The move has been welcomed by the league, and this development is hoped to help curb match-fixing, according to EPLSC.
