Saint George continued their fine form with a win over Ethio Electric on Tuesday. Relegation battlers Sihul Shire and Wolwalo Adigrat University both earned valuable points after holding Fasil Kenema and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, respectively, in Round 28 of the Ethiopian Premier League played at Hawassa University Stadium.
An early strike from Amanuel Erbo secured a 1-0 victory for Saint George over Ethio Electric. Erbo capitalized on a handling error by Electric’s Ghanaian goalkeeper, Iddrisu Abdulahi, who failed to gather the ball cleanly. The loose ball fell kindly for the Ethiopian forward, who calmly slotted it home from the edge of the box.
Saint George surprisingly leapfrogged three clubs to move into fourth place with 40 points. Ethio Electric, now on a three-game losing streak, sit 12th with 32 points.
Bottom side Wolwalo Adigrat University struck late to earn a 2-2 draw against holders Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. Dawa Hotessa gave the Yellows an early lead. The Bankers rallied to turn the game around with two superb goals from Abdulkerim Mohammed and Adis Gidey. Ghanaian Imoro Manaf equalized in the final action of the match, keeping Wolwalo unbeaten for a second consecutive game. CBE are eighth with 37 points.
Fasil Kenema and Sihul Shire shared the spoils in the later kickoff, which ended 1-1. Ugandan striker Martin Kizza gave the Emperors an 11th-minute lead, but Birhanu Adamu restored parity just two minutes later with a header. Fasil are 10th with 35 points, while Shire remain 17th with 20 points.
