Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers has revealed his delight after he scored for Rangers against Fenerbahce in their resounding 3-1 Europa League first leg win at Şükrü Saracoğlu in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday.
Having opened the scoring in the sixth minute, the Super Eagles forward provided an assist in the fixture that saw Ghana international Alexander Djiku come off the bench to score the only goal for Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.
“Overall, I think we can be very happy with this evening. We handled them well. It will not be easy to handle them again next week but you see that we can hurt any team on the counterattack,” said Dessers after the game as quoted by UEFA.com.
“It’s a very nice feeling to score in a stadium like this. For the first goal, I just saw the ball drop between the defender and the goalkeeper and that's one of those moments as a striker when you have to be sharp.”
Dessers’ goal against Fenerbahce took his tally to 22 goals this season. Despite having two goals ruled out in the Europa League Round of 16 first-leg clash, the Super Eagles striker still managed to find the net and provide an assist.
The in-form forward has already been included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. So far in Europa League this season, Dessers has scored three goals from nine matches and provided two assists.
