Former South Africa’s Black Leopards FC star Fischer Kondowe has left his Malawian childhood club, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, closing the curtain on a 23-year romance.
The 17-time TNM Super League champions released a statement on Wednesday, confirming the exit of the retired winger who was working as a second assistant coach with the Blantyre-based giants.
“FCB Big Bullets can confirm that Fischer Kondowe has left his position as second assistant coach by mutual consent…the club extends its sincere gratitude to Fischer for his dedication and service to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and wishes him every success in his future endeavours,” part of the statement reads.
Earlier, this week, Kondowe posted on his Facebook that ‘Free at last’ amid talk of his imminent exit.
The confirmation came days after unconfirmed reports of a fallout between the former Leopards midfielder and head coach Peter Mponda. The duo were teammates from Bullets youth, main squad, at the South African Motsepe Foundation Championship club and in the national team for over two decades.
The Malawi Player of the Year 2003 served Bullets from 1996 until 2005 when he trekked to South Africa for greener pastures after signing for Umtata Bush Bucks, only leaving them for Leopards a few seasons later when they closed shop. The crowd-favourite spent over five seasons at the Limpopo-based team, including a stint with Bloemfontein Celtic.
The former Flames star has parted ways with Bullets amid a mini crisis arising from two straight defeats at the hands of Mighty Wanderers since October and three consecutively overall this TNM Super League campaign.
Mponda’s team has also uncharacteristically failed to score in three games across all competitions, losing by 3-0 and 1-0 margins to Wanderers then firing blanks in the barren draw with Blue Eagles.
The uninspiring results have seen Bullets surrendering the league’s top spot to the Nomads.
