Ex-Kaizer Chiefs striker sentenced to 12 years in drug crackdown

In a shocking fall from grace, former Kaizer Chiefs and Black Leopards attacker Brian Abbas Amidu has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for drug dealing.

The 35-year-old retired forward, along with accomplice and former Dynamos FC player Reuben Mhlanga, was convicted following a major anti-narcotics operation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

The duo’s legal troubles began in October 2025 when they were intercepted by detectives near Kwekwe, in Zimbabwe’s Midlands province. At the time of their arrest, they were found in possession of a massive haul of cannabis (dagga) with an estimated street value of R1.2 million ($75,000).

In a statement released on Wednesday, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the two former athletes—identified in court as Tumai “Abbas Amidu” Matsika and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga—appeared for sentencing on February 24, 2026. Both were handed 12-year jail terms.

“The ZRP applauds members of the public for their continued cooperation and support in the fight against crime,” Nyathi stated, reiterating that “crime does not pay.”

A Career of Unfulfilled Potential For the Former Chiefs Man

Amidu’s journey to the summit of South African football began with immense promise. A graduate of the famed Aces Youth Academy—the same breeding ground that produced stars like Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat—Amidu earned a high-profile move to the PSL after a successful two-week trial in early 2012.

He arrived at Chiefs with a reputation as a prolific goalscorer, having netted 12 goals for his Zimbabwean side, Black Mambas FC, in the season prior to his move. Amidu was reportedly determined to continue that rich vein of form in the South African top flight.

However, his time at Kaizer Chiefs was plagued by persistent fitness issues. After struggling with injuries, his stint was cut short; he left the club in August of that same year without making a single official appearance for Amakhosi.

Seeking to revive his career, he moved to Black Leopards, where he finally found his footing. During his time with Lidoda Duvha, he featured in over 20 matches, recording four goals and two assists.

A Journeyman’s Path

Following his departure from the South African top-flight, the ex-Zimbabwean youth international became a journeyman, enjoying stints in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt

Despite his travels and undeniable talent, this conviction marks a tragic final chapter for a player once considered one of Zimbabwe’s brightest footballing prospects.
