Asare’s contribution to his club earned him a debut senior national team call up which culminated in his first appearances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The 32-year-old played two games, keeping consecutive clean sheets in Ghana’s 5-0 whitewashing of Chad in Accra and the 3-0 victory against Madagascar in Morocco in March.
The former Great Olympics keeper conceded his first goal when the four-time African champions lost 2-1 to Nigeria in the opening game of the 2025 Unity Cup semifinals at the GTech Community Stadium in London.
Ahorlu, who was in Ghana’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa has advised Asare to grab an opportunity to join a new club.
“For my advice, Benjamin Asare has to go. Benjamin Asare is an experienced goalkeeper [and has] been in the local league for long. I think this is the time for him to travel so for me if he travels it’s good,” Ahorlu told Radio Gold.
When asked about whether Asare stands to lose his position if he leaves Hearts of Oak for another club, the former Hapoel Ashkelon shot stopper said: “If the country forgets about him, that means he does not get more playing time at his new club or he is conceding too many goals, that could stall his chances of keeping his Black Stars position.
“But if he is working hard and keeping clean sheets I believe they [coaches] will continue to call him.”
Benjamin Asare made 27 appearances, conceding 12 goals and keeping 17 clean sheets as Hearts of Oak finished in fourth this past season.
