Ex-Ghana midfielder tips Jerry Afriyie to become a top striker for the Black Stars

Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has tipped young striker Jerry Afriyie to become a top attacker for the national team.

The 19-year-old scored on his Black Stars debut against Niger in the final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18. Prior to his debut call up, Afriyie was instrumental in Ghana winning the 2024 Africa Games on home soil before emerging as the top scorer at the 2024 U-20 WAFU Zone-B AFCON qualifiers with five goals.

The Thought FC hitman’s immense contribution saw the West African nation book automatic qualification to the next U-20 Africa Cup of Nations despite losing 2-1 to rivals Nigeria in the finals.

Badu, who scored Ghana’s winning penalty at the 2009 FIFA World Cup final in Egypt, spoke to Radio Gold Sports.

“Now there is eye on them everywhere especially the striker Jerry Afriyie. Afriyie has been fantastic throughout the Africa Games and through to this tournament [U-20 WAFU Zone-B] as well. The Black Stars coach can watch him one or two and he will be very good for us so that we can get his progress and transition very well.

“He is one guy that if we follow him well and give him a good progression, he will be a very good and a fantastic striker for the Black Stars, the U-23 or for the local team [Black Galaxies].” Agyemang Badu told Radio Gold Sports in Accra.

Jerry Afriyie also made history as the first player from Ghana’s Second Division to play for the Black Stars.
